At Fair Lakes Dentistry we offer both traditional braces and Invisalign® Aligner Therapy. Although both of these options can help you get a beautiful, straight smile, it’s how they get you there that’s different. Dr. Nail wants to help you choose the teeth-straightening solution that works best for you. Here is a comparison of braces versus Invisalign:
Comfort and Convenience
Traditional braces sometimes come with a little bit of pain and soreness. Because they use metal brackets and wires, braces can cause discomfort and even tooth decay from inaccurate brushing and flossing techniques. There’s also possibility of tooth discoloration, breakage of tooth bracket, plaque buildup, and difficulty chewing or swallowing. This is why when you go with traditional braces, you usually have more scheduled office visits, so that we can make sure your teeth and mouth stay clean and healthy.
Another thing that comes along with traditional braces are some dietary sacrifices, such as avoiding items that might stick to or get stuck under the braces. Food such as chips, bagels, popcorn, candies, and several types of fruits and vegetables are among the things that may cause issues. Without being able to brush or floss under the braces, there is a risk of some oral hygiene problems. Once again, as long as you keep your scheduled office visits, we can make sure that these issues do not occur.
Since Invisalign uses clear, removable aligner trays, there are no dietary sacrifices required. With Invisalign, you can remove the braces when you need to, which allows you to brush and floss as you normally would. In return, Invisalign requires less office visits throughout treatment. The flip side is that the bracket adhesive can sometimes get stained from coffee and other dark drinks, or cigarettes.
Traditional Braces can be a deal-breaker for some people simply because of how they look. They are more noticeable than Invisalign, although you can change out the color of the bands which can sometimes be fun, especially for children.
Invisalign uses clear orthodontic aligners that are removable, so not only are they barely noticeable when being used, but you can remove them when you have a big meeting, or even a date. However, frequently removing your aligners will lead to worse results.
Traditional braces can correct both vertically misaligned teeth and also rotated, crooked teeth over time. Regular visits to the office are required to tighten the braces as alignment proceeds, sometimes every week. You must wear the braces for the entire treatment time prescribed, which can sometimes take several years.
Invisalign is better suited for horizontally misaligned teeth. They don’t do as good of a job as braces at aligning teeth that are different heights, or teeth that are severely overcrowded. Only periodic visits to the office are required, once every 6 weeks or so. Since these aligners shift into place as the teeth adjust, there’s no need to wear the same ones long. Even extremely crooked teeth can be aligned and set right within a year to a year in a half.
Invisalign usually costs a bit more than traditional braces for a year-long treatment. The cost of each treatment will depend on the condition of the teeth and the length of the treatment. Call the Cypress, TX office for prices!
