Wisdom teeth are the third and final molar. These teeth are usually removed due to impaction or infection. An infected or impacted wisdom tooth often exhibits swelling around the jaw, bleeding gums, jaw pain, bad breath, and an unpleasant taste in the mouth.
If the wisdom teeth need removal, it is of great importance that you must be aware of the things to do after the procedure to quicken the healing process. To make this possible, we at Fair Lakes Family Dentistry prepared a list of easy tips to follow below. Read on!
Tips to Hasten Recovery After Wisdom Teeth Removal
Keep the area clean
Refrain from touching the area where the wisdom tooth has been removed. Rinsing the mouth with warm salt water can help prevent the food particles and bacteria from collecting on or around the treated area.
Observe liquid and soft food diet
For the first 24 hours, it is recommended for patients to stick to a liquid diet. Afterward, they can then gradually switch to soft foods to avoid adding any unnecessary discomfort. A soft food diet may include eating mashed potatoes, pasta, and other foods that don’t require an extensive effort when chewing.
Avoid alcohol consumption and tobacco use
Smoking tobacco and alcohol drinking must be stopped, especially if the patient is taking medication. These habits can delay the healing process, increase discomfort, and even risk from infection. Smoking needs to be stopped since it is another way to cause a dry socket.
Apply an ice pack against the affected side of the mouth
The use of an ice pack can reduce swelling, bruising, and any discomfort felt by the patient. Make sure to apply an ice pack intermittently for 20 minutes on and 20 minutes off for the first 36 hours.
Practice good oral hygiene
Brushing the teeth twice a day and flossing is always a must. It is best to use a soft-bristled toothbrush and to avoid brushing roughly on the treated areas. Flossing anywhere near the extraction sites is not advised as well.
